Celebration of Junior Wheelchair Tennis

Shankill TC hosted a Celebration of Junior Wheelchair Tennis at the club featuring players from Belfast, Greystones and Shankill. This was the first junior wheelchair tennis event in Ireland and marked the beginning of the European week of Sport.. It was a great morning of tennis for all of the players, Coaches, Volunteers and Parents and also included some very welcome Pizzas afterwards !!

It marked the beginning of the European Week of Sport for the Enjoy Tennis Programme.

After the tennis we had the opportunity to recognise the three players on the Ulster team who performed so well at the UK National School Games recently.

 Brady Chambers – Spokes in Motion Belfast

 Ryan Cleary – Spokes in Motion, Belfast

 Charlie Jago-Byrne – Greystones & Shankill

John Ryan, the President of Tennis Ireland made the presentation to the team members and told the players that Junior Wheelchair Tennis was growing quickly and was a priority for the Enjoy Tennis programme. The aim with IWA sport is to have a group in every county in Ireland.

Garreth Greene, Irelands no 1 wheelchair tennis senior player who recently broke into the top 100 worldwide was with us – giving the young guns a challenge on court dealing with his famous topspin backhands !!

The specialist wheelchair tennis chairs are essential for all of the players and the significant support of both the International Tennis Federation and Sport Ireland has been hugely important to us
